When a storm arose off the coast of Cuba around 1600, three sailors began to pray for help. The storm ceased, and they saw floating in the water a statue of Mary with the inscription "I am the Virgin of Charity". Nuestra Señora de la Caridad, is now enshrined in the town of El Cobre.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel is Mary's title as patroness of the Carmelite Order, which began on Mount Carmel near Jerusalem more than 800 years ago. Our Lady of Mount Carmel is most often seen on the brown scapular, a sacramental worn around the neck. The scapular is a silent prayer that tells Mary throughout the day that we venerate her, love her and trust in her protection.

As a young man, Augustine loved to party and spend his money. Realizing the emptiness of it all, he became a priest and bishop. He shared his conversion story in Confessions, writing: "Restless is our heart until it rests in you."

Legend has it that when a young child asked to be carried across a river, Christopher was happy to oblige. Surprised by how heavy the child was, Christopher learned that he was carrying Jesus, who bore the whole weight of the world.

Isidore, a humble and devoted farmer, frequently attended morning Mass and was sometimes late for his work. Miraculously, an angel was seen plowing while he prayed. He was known for many miracles both during his life and after his death.

As Jesus carried the heavy cross, a woman from the crowd wiped his face with a cloth. The blood and dirt left an imprint of Jesus’ face and we now know the woman as Veronica – a name meaning “true image”.

Standing upon the site where Mary appeared to Adele Brise in 1859, The National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion is the first National Shrine in the United States with an approved Marian apparition.
In 1917, Mary appeared to three shepherd children in Fátima, Portugal. Word spread, and tens of thousands of people gathered for the final apparition. Many, including skeptical journalists, testified that the sun began to "dance in the sky." During her six visits, Mary delivered many messages. Young Lúcia, one of the shepherd children, shared this one: "There is no problem, no matter how difficult...that cannot be solved by the Rosary."

Our Lady of Kibeho began appearing to several Rwandan schoolgirls in 1981, as tension increased between two Rwandan ethnic groups. The visions occurred at Kibeho College, a girls' high school, and asked for prayer and penance to prevent a terrible war. In 1994, about one million people were slaughtered during the devastating Rwandan genocide. Mary's message from the heart of Africa echoes today as one of love, repentance and conversion.

Bernadette Soubirous was ridiculed for claiming to speak with the Virgin Mary at a grotto in Lourdes. But the apparition was real; for more than 100 years, unexplainable healings have been attributed to Our Lady of Lourdes

An avid skier, hiker, and swimmer John Paul II was known for his love of the outdoors. Before he became pope the young Karol Wojtyla would lead youth retreats in the wilderness of Poland. After his election, when cardinals questioned the expense of installing a pool at one of the papal residences, he replied that it was “cheaper than another conclave.”

Nicholas Black Elk was a relative of Crazy Horse, witnessed the Battle of Little Bighorn, and performed for the Queen of England in Buffalo Bill’s traveling show. But above all, he was a Christian who honored the spirituality and traditions of his ancestors.

Since childhood, Saint John Paul II loved skiing in his home country of Poland. Moments after being elected pope in 1978, he turned to his friend and said, “I will ski again when they let me!”
