One of the most popular and beloved Christian Orthodox Icons from the most ancient times is the Orthodox icon of the Good Shepherd. As you look at Christ beautifully holding a sheep on his shoulder you are instantly taken to the Gospel of St. John, chapter 10, “I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep..I am the Good Shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me.”
This Orthodox icon is one of the most ancient as it adorned the catacombs of ancient Rome where the persecuted Christians celebrated their Liturgy. The image of the Good Shepherd is the most common of the symbolic representations of Christ found in Early Christian art in the Catacombs of Rome, before Christian imagery could be made explicit. The image continued to be used in the centuries after Christianity was legalized in 313. Initially it was probably not understood as a portrait of Jesus, but a symbol like others used in Early Christian art, and in some cases may also have represented the Shepherd of Hermas, a popular Christian literary work of the 2nd century. However, by about the 5th century, the figure more often took on the appearance of the conventional depiction of Christ, as it had developed by this time, and was given a halo and rich robes, as on the apse mosaic in the church of Santi Cosma e Damiano in Rome, or at Ravenna (right). Orthodox Christian icons of the Good Shepherd often include a sheep on his shoulders, as in the Lukan version of the Parable of the Lost Sheep.
Through Legacy Icons you can order your own professionally replicated image of this most beloved and ancient representations of our Lord Jesus Christ today.

Christ Blessing the Children Icon 6in x 7.5 in. Icons are hand-crafted and made-to-order
This stunning icon depicts the Six Days of Creation in one single incredible icon.
The starry firmament above contains the sun, moon, and stars. The border of the sky is marked by a rainbow, which in iconography symbolizes God's divine power and authority. The seas below are gathered into one place, bordered by dry land. The seas teem with life, while the sky is filled with birds and the land contains numerous plants and animals. Adam, the first-created man, sits in his place, giving glory to God for all things.
The Lord Jesus Christ sits in an orb of divinity in the center, his arms outstretched in a gesture of blessing and authority. In Orthodox theology and iconography, it is the Word of God in particular who accomplishes the Creation of the world—as Genesis says, the Lord spoke all things into existence.
The Creation account is read four times each year in the Orthodox Church: on the eves of the greatest feasts of the Lord Jesus—the Nativity, Theophany, and Pascha—and during the first week of Great Lent.
This beautiful icon was painted by Bulgarian iconographer Georgi Chimev, exclusively for Legacy Icons.
This beautiful icon of the Guardian Angel brings to mind the angelic spiritual protector of every baptized Christian. Our Guardian Angel accompanies our life, and encourages us toward holiness while striving to protect us from danger through our conscience. He bears a spiritual sword for this purpose, but his true weapon is the holy Cross, which puts every demon to flight.

On the third day after His death, the Sunday of Pascha (Easter), our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ raised Himself from the dead. This icon celebrates the universe-transforming event known as the Harrowing of Hades, the doctrine laid down in the Nicene Creed. In His spirit, the Lord descended into Hades, the realm of the dead. But death, being unable to hold Him Who is Life, was rendered powerless, and Christ raised the dead to eternal life.
In the icon, Christ is standing on the gates of Hades. He destroyed these ancient gates that had held all the dead captive. He is reaching down to Adam and Eve, our first human ancestors, pulling them from the grave. David, Solomon, and John the Baptist represent all the kings and prophets who had gone before, foreseeing this great event. Standing around them are multitudes of the dead who believed in Christ when He came to set them free.
The Resurrection is the feast of feasts, the season of seasons, in which we praise Christ for this glorious action that made our union with God possible.

Christ said to the Apostles, "I am the Vine, you are the branches." This icon depicts this saying literally, illustrating the important truth that the Apostles were united to Christ, as we all must be.

This 21st century icon, specially commissioned by Legacy Icons, shows the scene of the Mystical Supper (or the Last Supper). Christ reveals that one of his Disciples will betray Him, as they look at one another with shock. Judas, the betrayer, is seen reaching his hand toward the bowl, as the Gospel says. At this Passover meal, Christ instituted the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist.
The holy Eucharistic meal mystically transforms the nature of meals, in the same way that Baptism transforms all water and the Cross transforms all trees. For this reason, many Orthodox Christians display an icon of the Mystical Supper, particularly large ones, in their dining rooms. This icon makes a wonderful housewarming gift, and an ideal gift for a newly-married couple.

Many Eastern prayers to the Theotokos speak of her Protection, or Protecting Veil. In this icon, it is depicted literally—her veil being a shield against all the attacks of evil. The depiction of the Bodiless Angels surrounding her is meant to teach us how powerful her protecting intercessions are for us. The Archangels and Guardian Angels stand by to assist us in our times of need as we live our lives in Christ.

This detail from a large 16th century fresco features a Seraph. The Seraphim, which in Hebrew means "burning ones," are the highest of the nine angelic ranks. Their name indicates their closeness to God: so close that they are eternally burning with His divine fire and light as they commune directly with Him. They are depicted with six wings after the vision in Isaiah 6.
The feast day of all the angelic hosts is November 8.
Gabriel in the Hebrew language means Man of God or Might of God. He is a bringer of good news of the mysteries of God, especially at the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary. He holds messenger's staff, rather than a soldier's spear, and an orb, which represents authority. The Greek letter in the orb, X, means Christ.

Saint Katherine (also spelled Catherine) was a Great Martyr who suffered in the year 305 at the hands of Maximinus of Alexandria.
She is commemorated in the Slavic churches on November 24, the date of her martyrdom. In the Byzantine churches, she is commemorated on November 25, her feast being combined with the Leavetaking of the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple. This change was made at the request of the Monastery of St. Katherine on Mount Sinai.

An angel is a messenger of God, and a being which has stood before God and praised Him from a time before human comprehension. We cannot fully grasp what an angel's exact nature is, but we can understand an angel's function on earth. In icons, angels—especially the high-ranking Archangels—are depicted in an earthly form. All the angels are dressed as humans, in clothing accented with gold, the color of holiness and Heaven.
The Archangel Michael is the warrior of God, and in any given instance of heavenly warfare is likely present fighting for Him. In icons, Michael can always be identified by his soldier's attire, his armor, and the sword he wields. Also, Michael is frequently clothed in some shade of red. The color red can symbolize power, war, blood, and sacrifice: all appropriate to the angel who is engaged in warfare. His liturgical hymns refer to him as "the Commander of the bodiless hosts." He holds a flaming sword in one hand, a reference to the angel who guards the Garden of Eden in the book of Genesis, and an orb in his other hand, symbolizing his authority as the supreme Archangel.
This icon was painted by Fr. Theodore Koufos.

Raphael in the Hebrew language means Healing of God or God the Healer. One of the eight traditional archangels, he is named in the book of Tobit, where he restores sight to the blind. He holds a staff and an orb, which represents authority. The Greek letters in the orb, IC, mean Jesus.

Shortly before the Lord Jesus' life-giving Death, He wished to give His disciples an assurance of His Godhood and reveal to them the glory that awaits those who follow Him faithfully to the end. He took Peter, James, and John to the summit of Mount Tabor, and there He was transfigured, His face shining like the sun. The prophets Moses and Elijah also appeared, revealing that Christ is greater than the prophets and Lord of the living and the dead. Once again, as at His Baptism in the Jordan River, a voice came from heaven saying, "This is My beloved Son" (Matthew 17:5).
This was the fulfillment of the Lord's promise that "some standing here will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His Kingdom" (Matthew 16:28), for the fulness of the heavenly glory was revealed. This knowledge would strengthen the Apostles as they faced many persecutions for their preaching.

This icon features the Theotokos offering a flower to Christ. According to tradition, the flower represents the Virgin's purity and sweetness, offered as a sacrifice in order to give birth to the Son of God. This icon is celebrated on April 3rd.

The wonderful thing about icons of the Eastern Orthodox tradition are the depictions of how our Lord Jesus Christ comes and lives among us in everyday real life events. This beautiful icon depicting the story of Jesus at the Wedding of Cana performing his first public miracle, the changing of water into from John chapter 2, hails from the Stavronikita Monastery at Mt. Athos and is one of three Orthodox Christian icons that are traditionally held to speak of the dimensions of the Sacrament of Matrimony: Christ the Bridegroom Icon, the intimacy of wedded life in the icon of Sts. Joachim and Anna, and this beautiful image of Christ at the Cana Wedding.
This icon is a perfect gift for a wedding, anniversary or for any couple that shares their life with the Lord. Finally, each couple lives in relationship to “community,” pictured in the icon of the Wedding at Cana, with Christ and the Theotokos as the honored guests. The sacrament of marriage and the celebration that follows are always in the context of a community, showing that we do not live our married lives in isolation but as part of a larger body, which includes extended family, fellow parishioners, neighbors, colleagues and friends. If and when we are blessed with children, they become part of the community of the home, the fruit of the love of the husband and wife in Christ. All of this is shown so beautifully in this well loved Christian Orthodox icon.
When you are next invited to the Wedding of your family or friend, bless them with this deeply rich icon of Christ at Cana.
